cameraderie > Fish are the first creatures where we can see socially structured society. Each individual is aware it is in a matrix of social hierarchy, and waits and watches for cues from more senior individuals. So in the shoal, if the alpha fish flicks 2 cms to the left, so will he, maintaining the constant distance between them.
They are not too far apart, but not too close together either.
Too far apart and they become vulnerable to invaders and predators, too close together and they are a danger to each other.
